Sam Bourgein | MCSP HCPC

Diagnostic Physiotherapist

Sam Bourgein is an experienced Consultant Interventional Sonographer and Extended Scope Physiotherapist, committed to delivering the highest standard of musculoskeletal care. After completing his Master’s degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Brighton, Sam worked extensively across London and Oxford within the NHS, developing expertise in complex musculoskeletal conditions. He now holds a senior position as a Consultant Musculoskeletal Sonographer within the NHS, where he provides advanced diagnostic and interventional care.

His career then took him overseas, where he honed his skills in world-renowned clinics across New Zealand and Australia. During this time, he was appointed Lead Medical Clinician for Melbourne Australian Football, gaining invaluable experience in elite-level sports medicine and complex injury management. Sam has also worked with UK Sport, GB Athletics, Manchester United and Oxford United contributing to the care of high-performance athletes at the very top of their disciplines.

Sam is an Independent Prescriber and a highly skilled Musculoskeletal Sonographer, fully trained to assess and treat patients using ultrasound guidance. He is qualified in a wide range of interventional procedures including nerve hydrodissections, ganglion aspirations, joint and tendon injections, calcific barbotage, high-volume Achilles injections, ultrasound-guided hip joint injections, and hydrodilatation for frozen shoulder. He also utilises ultrasound-guided shockwave therapy for precise, targeted treatment of tendon and soft-tissue conditions.

Beyond intervention, Sam is qualified in manipulative techniques and Pilates, which he integrates into rehabilitation programmes to support long-term recovery. He has also acted as acase manager for complex insurance and occupational health cases, with extensive experience in return-to-work planning for patients recovering from significant injury. His clinical practice often focuses on complex patient management, particularly in individuals who have not improved with conventional therapies.

Sam works closely within multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with pain consultants, orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, rheumatologists, and radiologists. He firmly believes in the importance of looking at the whole picture rather than just the pathology in isolation, ensuring that every patient receives holistic, tailored care. Alongside this, he is amentor and educator, actively supporting the development of future clinicians in musculoskeletal medicine and intervention.

Outside of his clinical work, Sam is a keen gym-goer, enjoys motorbike touring across Europe, and continues to play padel at a high level. A former national-level ice hockey player and scratch golfer, he brings his personal passion for sport and movement into his clinical ethos—believing that maintaining activity at all stages of life is key to health and performance.

Sam is proud to provide cutting-edge musculoskeletal diagnostics and evidence-based treatments at The Move Clinic, helping patients access gold-standard care and often avoid unnecessary surgery.
